European Parliament to set up special committee to counter disinformation

Starting next year, the European Parliament will have a special committee on the European Shield of Democracy. It aims to counteract information interference and fight disinformation.
This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to Ukrinform.
The decision to create it at the plenary session in Strasbourg was supported by 441 deputies, 178 were against, 34 abstained.
"The Special Committee will be responsible for assessing the current legislation in order to identify possible loopholes, gaps and duplications that could be used to maliciously interfere with democratic processes, to establish cooperation between the Union bodies and national authorities, to promote democratic resilience through situational awareness, media and information literacy," the decision says.
In addition, the committee will examine interference using online platforms and their impact on democratic processes, hybrid threats and attacks, and content created by artificial intelligence.
The Ad Hoc Committee on the European Shield of Democracy will consist of 33 members and will have a 12-month term of office.
Its committee list will be determined by political groups and announced during the plenary week in late January.
Also on Wednesday, the European Parliament transformed the existing subcommittees on security and defense and on health into full-fledged committees.
