US to announce new $1.2bn military aid package for Kyiv - Reuters

US aid

The administration of US President Joe Biden intends to announce the final package of assistance to Ukraine under the Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) in the coming days to use the remaining funds allocated for the purchase of weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to Censor.NET, this was reported by Reuters, citing informed sources, Ukrinform informs.

According to the sources, the package will include air defence systems and artillery shells, but the exact content is still being discussed. It will cost about $1.2 billion.

Under the USAI programme, military equipment is purchased from the defence industry or partners rather than taken from US stockpiles, meaning it can take months to get to the battlefield.

The USAI package may be one of the last steps by the US to provide direct military support to Ukraine, as President-elect Donald Trump has publicly questioned the continuation of military aid and promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office on 20 January.

As a reminder, the UK has announced military aid to Ukraine worth £225 million ($286 million). The package will include boats and drones for the navy, as well as air defence, electronic warfare and spare parts.
