EU ready for Ukraine to stop Russian gas transit - European Commission

Gas transit

Currently, the European Union is ready to stop the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine from January 1, 2025.

This is stated in a written response from a spokesperson for the European Commission, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"The termination of the flow (of gas) through Ukraine from January 1 is an expected event, and the EU is ready for it," the response says.

The spokesperson reminded that the European Commission, in coordination with member states, has been working for more than a year to prepare for a scenario where there will be no Russian gas coming through Ukraine from January 1, 2025, and to provide alternative gas supply routes for member states.

"The European gas infrastructure is flexible enough to ensure the supply of non-Russian gas to Central and Eastern Europe through alternative routes. Since 2022, it has been significantly strengthened by new LNG (liquefied natural gas) import capacities," the European Commission spokesperson said.

In addition, according to him, the security of gas supplies to the EU has been significantly improved over the past few years due to measures to ensure efficient energy use and the development of renewable energy sources.

"The negative impact of the end of (gas) transit through Ukraine on the security of EU supplies is limited," the European Commission representative added.

At the same time, he noted that the European Commission is not commenting on Prime Minister Fico's visit to Moscow at this time.

Earlier, Orban said that Hungary was negotiating the supply of Russian gas through Ukraine. To recap, on December 22, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico arrived in Moscow to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. He said that he had visited Putin in response to Zelenskyy's reluctance to continue the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.
