US President-elect Donald Trump understands that the war can only be ended if Ukraine is strong militarily.
This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in an interview with the German edition of t-online, Censor.NET reports.
Scholz was asked whether he feared that Trump would abandon Ukraine. The chancellor replied that the newly elected US president wanted to end the war.
"Trump wants to end the war. And I have the impression that he, like us, is convinced that this will only be possible if Ukraine is strong militarily," the politician said.
Scholz refused to disclose the details of his conversations with Trump, but expressed confidence that "despite some fears, we will be able to achieve a coordinated policy on Ukraine between the United States and Europe, as well as between the United States and Germany."
"Be careful: a simple ceasefire does not mean a stable peace! And this applies to everything: nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine - we are talking to Ukraine, not about Ukraine. I have already spoken twice with the future US President Trump, and we agreed that the US and Europe should closely coordinate their actions. At the next stage, we will discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, and Germany will also play an important role," the German Chancellor said.
As a reminder, during their phone conversation, Scholz and Trump agreed that the war in Ukraine has been "lasting far too long."
