European gas infrastructure is flexible and ready for non-Russian gas supplies, - European Commission on stopping transit through Ukraine

Gas transit

The suspension of Russian gas transit through Ukraine was expected, and the EU has prepared alternative routes for the transport of blue fuel.

According to Censor.NET, the European Commission informed Suspilne about this.

It is noted that the European Commission, in coordination with Member States, has been working for more than a year to prepare for a scenario without Russian gas transit through Ukraine from 1 January 2025, as well as to provide alternative supplies for Member States that will be affected by this.

"The European gas infrastructure is flexible enough to ensure that non-Russian gas is supplied to Central and Eastern Europe via alternative routes. Since 2022, it has been reinforced by significant new LNG (liquefied natural gas) import capacities," the European Commission said in a commentary.

It is reported that the security of the EU gas supply architecture has been strengthened over the past few years, including through energy efficiency measures and the development of renewable energy sources.

As a reminder, at 07:00 on 1 January 2025, the transportation of Russian natural gas through Ukraine was suspended in the interests of national security. The Cabinet of Ministers said that Ukraine had informed the European Commission of the suspension of gas transit in accordance with the established procedure. European countries have prepared. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, in turn, assures that stopping Russian gas transit through Ukraine "will have drastic consequences" for everyone in the EU.
