Hungary to block extension of EU sanctions against Russia if Ukraine threatens our energy security - Szijjarto

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto

Hungary is threatening to block the next extension of the European Union's sanctions against Russia if Ukraine "does not refrain from measures that harm Budapest's energy security."

This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, Censor.NET reports citing 444.hu.

He reiterated that Budapest has always been against sanctions against Russia and threatened to block the next extension of sanctions by the EU countries.

"Hungary has never hidden its position on sanctions, and the last three years have clearly shown that we are right about sanctions... It would be better to get rid of them as soon as possible," Szijjarto said.

The Hungarian foreign minister reminded that this week the European Commission provided guarantees that Ukraine "will not jeopardize the energy security of Hungary and Central Europe."

"If the European Commission fails to keep its word, if it fails to ensure that Ukraine refrains from measures or decisions that harm Hungary's energy security, then they will have to take responsibility for the next decision on sanctions," Szijjarto added.

As a reminder, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Hungary could seek the lifting of EU sanctions against Russia if Russian gas transit through Ukraine is not resumed.
