Russia seized about 320 sq km of Ukraine in January - British intelligence

The Russians seized less territory in January than in December, but still managed to advance. Russian troops occupied about 320 square kilometres compared to about 400 square kilometres in December 2024.
According to Censor.NET, this is stated in a report by the UK Ministry of Defence.
Analysts note that the Russian army captured the Velyka Novosilka stronghold, but advances along most of the front were relatively minor.
According to British intelligence, the Russian advance accelerated during 2024, and in November 2024, more than 700 square kilometres were captured, which is one of the fastest rates of advance since the early stages of the war.
In the Kursk region of Russia, Russia made minor gains in January 2025. North Korean units deployed in offensive combat operations in the Kursk region have temporarily withdrawn from their positions on the front line, likely to rest and rearm before deploying again, analysts add.
"This is almost certainly primarily due to heavy losses sustained during attacks against Ukrainian-held positions," the UK Ministry of Defence said.
As a reminder, DeepState analysts reported on the occupation of Velyka Novosilka on 29 January.
