US Treasury Secretary Bessent to visit Ukraine this week to discuss access to rare earth metals - Bloomberg

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is planning an official visit to Kyiv this week as part of initial talks to secure U.S. access to Ukraine's rare earth metals.
According to Censor.NET, this was reported by Bloomberg.
It is noted that the visit will take place against the backdrop of new initiatives of the Donald Trump administration aimed at ensuring access to strategic Ukrainian resources.
According to the publication, Trump is seeking to strengthen the economic and technological security of the United States, in particular by creating alternative supply chains for rare earth metals and other critical materials for the defense industry.
During the visit, Bessent is expected to hold talks with representatives of the Ukrainian government on economic support, reforms and prospects for cooperation in the field of mineral extraction.
For the United States, cooperation with Ukraine is an opportunity to reduce dependence on supplies of strategic materials from China, the agency adds.
In addition to economic issues, the visit is also seen as a political signal of support for Ukraine in the ongoing war with Russia.
Details of the upcoming agreements have not yet been disclosed.
Thus, Bessent may become the first member of Donald Trump's cabinet to visit Ukraine. The White House declined to comment on the matter.
As a reminder, Trump recently said that he wants to sign a $500 million deal with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on access to rare earth resources and natural gas in Ukraine in exchange for security guarantees in any potential peace settlement.
