Pro-Russian politician Georgescu detained in Romania and sent for interrogation - media

The Romanian General Prosecutor's Office is conducting 47 searches in five districts of the country as part of a case that incriminates crimes against the constitutional order, false information about the sources of campaign financing, or public incitement to a crime.
This is reported by Radio Liberty, Censor.NET informs.
It is noted that the target is the group of Horatiu Potra, a close associate of pro-Russian politician, former presidential candidate Kelin Georgescu.
Media outlets cited judicial sources as saying that Georgescu was detained by police. He has now been taken for questioning by the prosecutor's office. The politician was detained for violating traffic rules.
The prosecutor's office said that the searches were conducted in the judets (districts) of Sibiu, Mures, Timis, Ilfov and Cluj. The targets of the searches were 27 individuals and four offices belonging to legal entities.
Horatiu Potra is a former leader of Romanian mercenaries who fought in Africa.
Bălăin Georgescu accused the authorities of "seeking to invent evidence to justify the theft of the election and to do everything to block my new presidential candidacy."
Earlier, pro-Russian Romanian presidential candidate Georgescu called Ukraine a "fictitious" state and wants to divide it.
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry commented on the Romanian politician's statements, calling them "a manifestation of extreme disrespect for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people."
Elections in Romania
As a reminder, on November 24, 2024, the first round of the presidential election took place in Romania. There were 14 candidates on the ballot.
Kelin Georgescu (22.95%) and Elena Lasconi (19.17%) have advanced to the second round, which will be held on December 8.
The country's Supreme Security Council reported that Romania was the target of "aggressive hybrid Russian attacks" during the presidential election in the country.
The Constitutional Court canceled the results of the first round of the presidential election in Romania.
