European Parliament opposes forcing Ukraine to surrender to Russia

European Parliament

On March 12, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning any attempts to blackmail Ukraine into surrendering to Russia in order to announce a peace agreement.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the EP.

In the resolution "Continuation of the EU's unwavering support for Ukraine after three years of Russia's aggressive war", the European Parliament strongly opposed any attempts to force Ukraine to agree to a peace agreement through pressure or blackmail.

"The European Parliament ... strongly condemns any attempts to blackmail the leadership of Ukraine into surrendering to the Russian aggressor with the sole purpose of announcing a so-called 'peace agreement,'" the resolution reads.

As noted, the deputies expressed concern about possible attempts by the US administration to reach an agreement with Russia without the constructive participation of Ukraine and other European countries. The document emphasizes that any peace agreement must be accompanied by reliable security guarantees, given Russia's previous violations of international agreements.

At the same time, the European Parliament supported the idea of a 30-day ceasefire agreement, hoping that Russia would agree to it.

In addition, the resolution emphasized the need for a significant increase in assistance to Ukraine, including military support, as well as the acceleration of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.

The European Parliament also called for the confiscation of frozen Russian assets to be used for Ukraine's defense and reconstruction.

"Russian sovereign assets frozen under EU sanctions should be confiscated and used for Ukraine's defense and reconstruction," MEPs said.
