Ukraine’s EU accession is unrealistic; Hungary supports membership "based on merit" – Orban’s adviser

Advisor to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Balázs Orban, has said that Ukraine is not ready to join the European Union now and in the next few years.
He told journalists about this, Censor.NET reports.
According to him, no one guarantees that the issue of Ukraine's membership in the EU will change in a few years.
"This is only possible if we raise the issue of enlargement on merit. Then it becomes clear that Ukraine's accession in the short or medium term is unrealistic. The problem is that Ukraine is not ready to join the EU in its current form, and no one guarantees that this will change in a few years. Instead, they want to guarantee it with huge EU budget funds. Hungary does not want to contribute to this. That is why we support the logic of merit-based enlargement. And according to this logic, Ukraine's accession to the EU would not be a realistic option," Orban said.
The Hungarian prime minister's adviser also commented on a possible truce between Russia and Ukraine: "I am optimistic because communication channels have been established."
However, he said that he would not hide it: Hungary expected more.
At the same time, Balázs Orbán added that U.S. mediation is very important in the process of establishing a truce between Russia and Ukraine, as is the role of China.
Earlier, Hungarian Minister for European Union Affairs János Boka said that Ukraine should become a "buffer zone" between the EU and Russia.
