Hungary supports EU rearmament plan, but without providing military aid to Ukraine – Orban’s adviser

Advisor to Hungarian Prime Minister Balázs Orban

Hungary is in favor of the ReArm Europe rearmament plan, but Budapest does not support Ukraine's involvement in this plan and assistance to non-EU countries.

This was announced by Balázs Orban, a member of the Hungarian parliament and advisor to Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Censor.NET reports citing Suspilne.

According to him, Hungary believes that the European Union should spend more money on defense: it means more sovereignty for Europe.

Hungary has allegedly been taking this position for about 10 years, and all these years Hungary has been criticizing the EU for ignoring defense and armament spending.

Orban argues that the EU should spend money only on its own defense and not help third countries.

"Therefore, we believe that the interests of the European Union and the European people are more important than the interests of other countries. That is why I understand that their position is that they want to get more money from the European Union, but our duty is to protect and ensure the security of Europeans," the Hungarian MP said.

When asked from whom Europeans should defend themselves, Balázs Orbán replied: "From anyone".

According to him, threats to Europe are on "several fronts". There are also hybrid threats to which Europe must respond.

"If other member states are ready to help a non-EU country, they can do so. So, Hungary does not intend to prevent this. So, if they want to do it, they can do it. It is their responsibility. But I think it is not European to force Hungary to participate if the majority of Hungarian people do not want to be involved," added the advisor to Viktor Orban.
