US sanctions bill against Russia would impose 500% tariff on imports from countries that buy Russian resources - Washington Times

US preparing new sanctions against Russia

US senators call for tough sanctions against Russia if it refuses to take further steps towards peace in Ukraine. The sanctions may include a 500% duty on goods from countries that buy Russian oil and gas.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to The Washington Times.

As noted, Senators from the Republican Party Lindsey Graham and the Democratic Party Richard Blumenthal introduced a bill that provides for the imposition of sanctions against Russia for refusing to negotiate a lasting peace with Ukraine.

Among the 50 co-authors of the bill in the Senate, there are an equal number of Republicans and Democrats, which indicates broad bipartisan support for the initiative.

"The dominating view in the United States Senate is that Russia is the aggressor, and that this horrific war and Putin’s aggression must end now and be deterred in the future," the senators said in a joint statement.

The document provides for both primary and secondary sanctions against Russia and individuals who support the Kremlin's aggression against Ukraine. Restrictions will be applied if peace talks fall apart or an agreement is reached but violated by Russia.

In particular, the law could impose a 500% tariff on imported goods from countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products.

This could provide some reassurance to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has said he wants protection against a new Russian military invasion enshrined in the agreement.

In the document, the senators expressed their hope that in 2025, President Trump and his team "will achieve what has eluded the world in the past: ending Russian aggression against Ukraine permanently and ensuring the survivability of a free and democratic Ukraine."

"These sanctions against Russia are at the ready and will receive overwhelming bipartisan, bicameral support if presented to the Senate and House for a vote," the authors of the document added.

Earlier, Censor.NET reported that the US Senate would introduce a draft law to tighten sanctions against Russia. It was also reported that Trump was disappointed with Putin and was preparing to impose tough sanctions on Russia's "shadow fleet".
