Trump: I would love to run in 2028. I have best numbers in history

US President Donald Trump has said that he could run for the US presidency in 2028. However, given the unconstitutionality of the third term, he considers Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to be the main contenders for this position.
The American politician told journalists about this on board Air Force One on his way to Japan, Politico reports, Censor.NET reports.
About the third term
Trump was asked about his position on the idea of running for a third term, which was recently put forward by former White House strategist Steve Bannon.
"I would be happy to do that. I have the best results in history," he replied.
The main candidates for the US presidency
After that, Trump said that he "didn't really think about it" and that "there are good people in the US."
When journalists asked him to name names, the White House chief pointed to Secretary of State Rubio and said, "We have wonderful people — I don't need to go into details. One is standing right here."
Trump also praised US Vice President Vance.
"Obviously, J.D. is great. He's a great vice president. I'm not sure anyone will run against these two," he added.
What is known about Trump's plans for a third term
The 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution, which came into force in 1951, states that a candidate can only be elected president twice. It was approved by Congress in 1947, two years after the death of President Franklin Roosevelt, who won a fourth term in the presidential election and died less than three months after taking office.
On March 30, 2025, Trump did not rule out the possibility of running for a third term and stated that "there are appropriate methods" for doing so.
However, on April 28, in an interview with The Atlantic, Trump said that he did not plan to do so, and on May 4, he confirmed once again that he would not run for a third term and was therefore looking for a successor.
