EU expanded sanctions against Russia’s "shadow fleet": 41 more vessels added to list

New EU sanctions against Russian tankers: a blow to the "shadow fleet"

The Council of the European Union has imposed new sanctions on more than 40 vessels that are part of Russia's "shadow fleet" of oil tankers and contribute to Russia's energy export revenues.

According to Censor.NET, citing "European Pravda", this is stated in an official statement by the Council of the EU.

On Thursday, 18 December, 41 more vessels were added to the list of vessels subject to a ban on access to ports and a wide range of maritime transport services.

Which vessels were subject to sanctions

As emphasised by the EU Council, the restrictive measures are aimed at tankers belonging to the so-called "shadow fleet" of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. These are vessels that circumvent oil price restrictions or support Russia's energy sector.

In addition, sanctions were imposed on vessels involved in the transportation of military equipment to Russia, as well as those involved in the removal of stolen Ukrainian grain and cultural property from Ukraine.

What preceded it?

Off the east coast of China, a fleet of tankers loaded with Russian Urals crude oil has expanded after India, the largest buyer of this type of oil, restricted purchases following Western sanctions.
