Eastern flank and Ukraine arepriorities, but Latvia is prepared to consider US requests within framework of NATO, — Prime Minister Silina

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina on the US and Ukraine

Latvia is prepared to consider a request from the United States, within the framework of NATO, to support its actions in the Middle East, but the country’s priorities remain strengthening the Alliance’s eastern flank and supporting Ukraine.

According to Censor.NET, this was stated by Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina.

Rising oil prices

Silina noted that Iran’s actions are driving up oil prices, harming the European economy, and, unfortunately, also benefiting the aggressor state—Russia.

"We have already discussed within the government measures to mitigate the impact of rising oil prices in Latvia. This week, I will also raise this issue at the European Council during talks with leaders of other EU countries, as well as with the United States and other allies," the prime minister said.

Ukraine is among the priorities

She noted that if the United States were to make a specific request within the framework of NATO, Latvia would consider it very seriously.

"At the same time, our priority remains strengthening NATO's eastern flank and supporting Ukraine," Silina emphasized.

What led up to

As a reminder, U.S. President Donald Trump previously stated that most NATO countries refused to participate in a U.S. military operation against Iran to protect the Strait of Hormuz. He claims that Washington "does not need the help" of its allies.
