Mercedes driver who caused fatal road accident in Kyiv has been charged. PHOTO

Under the procedural supervision of juvenile prosecutors from the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, a 49-year-old driver has been notified that he is suspected of violating traffic safety regulations, resulting in the deaths of four people.
This was reported by Censor.NET, citing the press office of the Prosecutor General's Office.
As noted, the driver's actions have been classified under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The circumstances of the tragedy
It has been established that on June 5, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a driver was speeding while driving a Mercedes-Benz along Chokolivskyi Boulevard. On a curved section of the road, he veered off the roadway and crashed into an underpass where people were present.
Victims
As a result of the traffic accident, four pedestrians—two local police officers, a woman, and a 12-year-old boy—died at the scene. Three other people were injured.
The driver himself sustained injuries that are not life-threatening. He has been taken into custody and is under guard in a hospital room.
It has now been established that at the time of the accident, the man was sober.
Fines
At the same time, since January 2025, he has been charged with administrative offenses five times for speeding and fined five more times for other traffic violations. In total, the driver has received 10 fines over the past 1.5 years.
- In addition to being notified of the charges against him, he was served with a motion to impose a pretrial detention order without the option of bail.
- For causing a fatal traffic accident, the driver faces imprisonment for up to ten years and a suspension of their driver’s license for up to three years.
- The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators from the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv.
