US President Donald Trump called on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to end the war against Ukraine at the United Nations General Assembly on 22 September.

When journalists asked what he would like to say to Putin, Trump responded with a single phrase: "Settle the war!"

Trump’s statement came ahead of the opening of the UN General Assembly, where several related meetings are scheduled to take place this week.
- Vice President JD Vance confirmed that a meeting between Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy was expected on 22 or 23 September. He expressed cautious optimism about progress, although he described Russia’s war against Ukraine as "the most difficult international conflict" to resolve.
- Trump’s comment came shortly after Zelenskyy said in an interview with CBC News that he was ready to meet with Putin to bring peace closer. He also outlined a condition for de-escalation: Ukraine would stop striking Russian oil refineries only in response to a similar move by Moscow.
- Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly called for a separate "energy ceasefire" between the two sides.
