On September 23, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov began a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It is their fifth meeting since 2025.
American journalists reported this, Censor.NET reports.
What is known?
The US and Russian representatives are meeting behind closed doors. Journalists were allowed to film the opening minutes of the talks before being asked to leave the room.
According to media reports, the Russian delegation includes Ambassador to the US Alexander Darchiev; Alexander Gusarov, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s North Atlantic Department; Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova; Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia; and Alexei Drobinin, director of the Foreign Policy Planning Department.
Rubio and Lavrov previously met in Riyadh, Kuala Lumpur, New York and Manila. Before this meeting, Lavrov said he planned to discuss, among other things, "Washington’s view of the situation in Ukraine" with the US Secretary of State.

- On September 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump met in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. They discussed Patriot production in Ukraine. Trump said that he and Zelenskyy were working together to end the Russia–Ukraine war before winter.
- Trump separately said Ukrainian strikes on oil refineries had dealt Russia "a serious blow", but had also affected global diesel prices.
- After meeting Trump, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready for any form of energy ceasefire with Russia. The US side is to convey the proposal to Russia.
