"Opposite the car park, the agent installed a mobile phone camera, disguised in a juice carton, with remote access for Russian intelligence officers.

Using this ‘video trap’, the Russians hoped to monitor the soldiers boarding the bus and detonate it as it travelled to its destination," the report states.

The SSU uncovered the enemy’s plot in time, defused the explosives and detained the agent at the city coach station as he was hurriedly attempting to leave the regional centre for Kyiv after planting the explosive device, in order to "go into hiding".

A smartphone was seized from the student, which he had used to "report back" to the Russian Federation about the explosives planted at the site of the planned terrorist attack.

Who was working for the enemy?

"The intelligence operation was carried out by a student at one of the capital’s universities. He came to the attention of Russian security services whilst searching for ‘quick’ money in themed Telegram channels.

After being recruited, the Russians ‘sent’ him to Rivne to prepare the bombing of a military vehicle carrying Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel.

Upon arriving in the city, the agent settled into a rented flat and later received the coordinates of a hideout from his handler in the Russian Federation, from which he collected a homemade explosive device," the statement reads.

The explosive device was reinforced with two glass bottles containing flammable liquid to increase its destructive power.

The detainee has now been informed that he is suspected of a completed attempted terrorist attack.

He is being held in custody without the right to bail. He faces up to 12 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.
