What led up to this?

• The day before, US President Donald Trump stated that he believes it is time for Ukraine to choose a new leader who will be able to reach agreements to end the war.
• Commenting on Trump’s statement, Peskov claimed that Volodymyr Zelenskyy was allegedly failing to demonstrate the political will to end the war.
• For his part, Zelenskyy stated that he was prepared to discuss the issue of elections if the US reached an agreement with Russia on a complete ceasefire.
• The Kremlin has rejected Zelenskyy’s initiative for a 60-day ceasefire to allow for elections in Ukraine
