SBI officers detained a law enforcement officer from Odesa region who was trying to organise a channel for smuggling men of military age to unrecognised Transnistria.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the SBI press service.

It is noted that the law enforcement officer decided to organise the smuggling scheme in September this year.

"He knew the border area and the location of the checkpoints well. The man recruited people who wanted to leave Ukraine through social media, and charged USD 6,500 for each person. He was assisted by accomplices who were supposed to take the men to the border with unrecognised Transnistria," the press service said.

On 22 October, SBI officers detained the official while he was trying to smuggle four conscripts across the border.

The law enforcement officer was served a notice of suspicion of illegal trafficking of persons across the state border (Part 3 Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The sanction of the article provides for up to 9 years in prison.

The SBI added that the issue of choosing a measure of restraint and removal from office is being decided. The investigation is ongoing, and the full range of persons involved in the fraud is being established.
