A Russian colonel-general and four of his subordinates will be tried for shelling the Neutron Source nuclear facility in Kharkiv.
According to Censor.NET, this was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
According to the investigation, they ordered the shelling of the National Research Centre "Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology", which houses the world's only nuclear subcritical facility, the Neutron Source, and a nuclear material storage facility. In 2022, the facility was shelled 74 times with various types of weapons, air bombs, high-explosive shells from cannon artillery, high-explosive and cluster shells from Grad, Uragan, Smerch and Peony multiple launch rocket systems.
The main defendant is a colonel general, at that time the acting commander of the Western Military District of the Russian Armed Forces, who directly supervised the destruction of the KhPF. The next defendants in the military hierarchy are two generals: the commander of the 6th Combined Arms Army and the commander of the 6th Air Force and Air Defence Army. Also among the defendants are Russian colonels: the commander of the 45th Heavy Artillery Brigade and the commander of the 79th Guards Novozibkivska Jet Artillery Brigade.
We are talking about the head of the Western Military District of the Russian Armed Forces, Colonel-General Alexander Zhuravlev and four of his subordinates:
- Lieutenant General Oleh Makovetskyi, Commander of the 6th Air Force and Air Defence Army;
- Lieutenant General Vladyslav Yershov, Commander of the 6th Combined Arms Army;
- Colonel Pavel Pilyukov, commander of the 45th High Capacity Artillery Brigade;
- Colonel Yevhen Gerashchenko, commander of the 79th Guards Jet Artillery Brigade in Novozybkiv.
The heads of military formations and units, following an illegal order from the commander of the Western Military District, ordered subordinate units of the Russian Armed Forces, which had taken up positions in settlements, fields and forest belts located in the areas adjacent to Kharkiv in the Kharkiv region, Belgorod region, and at the Kursk and Voronezh airfields, to shell and bomb the KhFTI.
According to a comprehensive forensic engineering, environmental and economic examination, the environment was damaged to the tune of almost UAH 15 billion. The cost and scope of restoration work on the Institute's buildings and structures that were destroyed or damaged amounted to more than UAH 30 million. And these are not the final figures. Enemy shelling destroyed exclusive multi-million dollar equipment that has no analogues in the world.
The defendants are on the wanted list. They will be tried in absentia.
