Officers from the State Bureau of Investigations have arrested and charged a soldier who, whilst under the influence of alcohol, caused a fatal road traffic accident in the Sumy region.

A teenage boy died as a result of the accident, reports Censor.NET.

Details of the fatal accident

The tragedy occurred on the evening of 1 June 2026 near the village of Terny in the Romny district. According to the investigation, the soldier, whilst driving a car under the influence of alcohol, lost control of the vehicle. He veered into the oncoming lane, where he collided head-on with a motorbike.

As a result of the powerful impact, the 17-year-old motorcyclist suffered severe multiple injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the young man died in hospital a few hours after being admitted.

Officers from the State Bureau of Investigation promptly detained the serviceman at the scene. He has now been formally charged with violating road safety regulations by driving a vehicle whilst intoxicated, resulting in the death of the victim.

The penalty under this provision is severe and provides for imprisonment for up to 10 years , with a driving ban for up to 10 years.

The issue of imposing a preventive measure in the form of detention on the suspect is currently being decided. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and the Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the proceedings.

The agency emphasised that the investigation into crimes committed by military personnel that have resulted in loss of life is under special scrutiny and is a priority area of work for the State Bureau of Investigation.
