Officers from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), with the assistance of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), have detained an investigating officer from the Korosten District Department of the SSU in the Zhytomyr region, who was selling information about the owners of certain telephone numbers to third parties for money.
This was reported by Censor.NET, citing the State Bureau of Investigation’s press centre.
Trafficking in confidential data on calls and geolocation
He had access to a classified official database and was able to track information on incoming and outgoing calls, as well as the exact location of telephone subscribers. This information was intended for use in tracking down criminals, but instead he ‘traded’ it.
The man had been running his "business" since at least May 2026. He was exposed when another client, who suspected his wife of infidelity, asked him to "track" her phone. This service cost 50,000 UAH. The official received half of this as an advance payment, and the rest after providing all the information.
Caught red-handed and facing punishment
- On 27 August 2026, officers from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) caught the law enforcement officer "red-handed" whilst he was receiving the second instalment of the bribe.
- He has been notified of his status as a suspect in the offence of receiving an unlawful benefit, combined with extortion (under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
- The penalty under this provision is imprisonment for up to 10 years with confiscation of property.
- Investigators are currently establishing the full extent of the suspect’s contacts and the scale of his criminal activities.
