Why is this important?
-
Cheap and cheerful: The use of APWKS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System) missiles on F-16 fighters allows for significant savings on expensive air-to-air missiles (such as the AIM-120 AMRAAM or AIM-9 Sidewinder).
-
Laser precision: The APWKS missile is a modernised 70 mm unguided Hydra 70 missile equipped with a laser guidance unit. It is ideal for destroying slow-moving targets such as UAVs.
-
Technological breakthrough: The integration of APWKS into the F-16 weapon system allows the Ukrainian Air Force to transform fighter jets into highly effective "drone hunters" with a large ammunition supply on board.
Technical characteristics of the duel:
-
Target: "Shahed-136" (Geran-2).
-
Weapon: APWKS missile with semi-active laser homing head.
-
Result: Direct hit and complete annihilation of the enemy drone in the air.
