Scholz calls on Putin to negotiate with Ukraine to achieve just peace - German government

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during today's telephone conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin called on Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine and be ready for peace talks.

German federal government spokesman Steffen Gebestreit said that Scholz "condemned Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and called on Putin to stop it and withdraw his troops."
The Federal Chancellor insisted that Russia should be ready to negotiate with Ukraine in order to achieve a just and lasting peace and emphasized Germany's unwavering determination to support Ukraine in the peace process," the statement said.
Also, the German government added, Scholz emphasized "Germany's unwavering determination to support Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression for as long as necessary."
As a reminder, the last telephone conversation between Scholz and Putin took place in December 2022, when the German Chancellor called on the Russian president to withdraw Russian troops from Ukraine and find a "diplomatic solution to the conflict."
