Scholz plans visit to Moscow on ’peace mission’ in coming days - Der Spiegel

Scholz plans a visit to Moscow in the near future

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is trying to use the potential reconciliation between Ukraine and Russia to strengthen his political rating ahead of the early parliamentary elections on February 23.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the publication Der Spiegel.

As noted, during the vote of confidence in Scholz's government on December 16, a CDU representative told another member of the Bundestag that he had information about Scholz's upcoming visit with a "peacekeeping mission" and that it should be investigated.

"He said that his old acquaintance is a member of the 'Eastern Committee of the German Economy' (German Foreign Trade Association - ed.), which has maintained good relations with the Kremlin for decades. And the committee is firmly convinced that the chancellor will go to Moscow on a "peacekeeping mission" in the next few days," the newspaper writes.

Currently, polls show that the rating of Scholz and his Social Democratic Party is significantly lower than that of the CDU/CSU bloc led by Friedrich Merz.

At the same time, Scholz's actions aimed at preventing the escalation of the war, such as refusing to transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine and his call to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, have found support among most voters.

According to political analysts, Scholz's successful "peacekeeping" in the next two months before the election could boost his rating and allow him to retain the post of German Chancellor.

Scholz's call to Putin

On November 15, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke on the phone with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for the first time in two years.

According to him, the phone conversation with Putin was not pleasant, as the Russian dictator continues to insist on achieving his military goals in Ukraine.

On Monday, December 16, the German Bundestag expressed a vote of no confidence in the government of the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
