Denmark and Sweden are monitoring Russian ships that have been circling Baltic Sea for at least two days

Russian ships spotted in Kattegat Strait in Baltic Sea

The Danish and Swedish coast guards are currently monitoring two Russian ships that have been circling a small area in the Kattegat Strait in the Baltic Sea for at least two days.

This was reported by the Swedish TV channel TV4, Censor.NET reports.

It is noted that this is a Russian search ship and a Russian tugboat. It is unclear why the Russian ships are sailing in the strait.

"We are aware of these ships and have informed the relevant authorities and the Danish Maritime Administration," said Klas Loven, an officer at the Swedish Coast Guard Command Center.

At the same time, the Swedish Coast Guard stated that the ships were in Danish waters.

TV4 reported that the Russian ships had been visible on radar and circling a small area in Kattegat since at least the evening of Monday, January 6.

Denmark also said it was aware of the ships. In particular, their maneuvers are being monitored in the port of Grenaa.

"There is no indication that the ships will enter the port of Grenaa. But if they ask, they certainly won't be allowed to do so," port director Henrik Carstensen told DR.

According to him, it is not unusual for Russian - or other - ships to be idle in Kattegat, for example, while waiting for contracts to be renewed.

As a reminder, on December 25, the tanker Eagle S, which probably belongs to the Russian shadow fleet, damaged the Estlink 2 electric cable between Finland and Estonia and four telecommunications cables in the Gulf of Finland with its anchor.

In November 2024, a telecommunications cable between Sweden, Lithuania, Finland, and Germany was severed.

In October 2023, the Balticconnector gas pipeline and cables were damaged by the vessel Newnew Polarbear.
