46% of Americans support mineral deal for aid to Ukraine, 50% oppose - Reuters poll

Ukraine’s defeat will cost US more than aid

46% of US citizens support the United States receiving a share of Ukrainian minerals in exchange for aid to Kyiv, while 50% oppose it.

This is evidenced by the data of a Reuters/IPSOS poll, Censor.NET informs.

According to the results of the poll, American society does not have a single opinion on the initiative supported by Donald Trump. 46% of respondents agree that the United States should receive a share of Ukrainian minerals in exchange for the support provided, while 50% are against it. Another 4% of respondents are undecided.

Political preferences significantly influence the position of citizens:

  • 73% of Republicans support mineral extraction,
  • compared to just 21% of Democrats.

At the same time, 75% of Democratic Party supporters believe that Ukraine should not give US resources in exchange for aid.

Minerals agreement with the US

Recall, Trump said that he wants to conclude a $ 500 billion agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on access to rare earth resources and natural gas in Ukraine in exchange for security guarantees in any potential peace settlement.

President Zelenskyy said that the agreement with the US on minerals will be signed at the ministerial level when ready and under the conditions of guarantees. This document is not ready at the moment to protect Ukraine's interests.

Later, Trump said that Ukraine broke the agreement on rare earth metals. The agreement was needed so that the US could return the funds spent on supporting Ukraine.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has given Ukraine an "improved" draft of the agreement on minerals, which "conforms to Ukrainian legislation."

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that if the US wants to see specific figures in the agreement on minerals, then according to Ukrainian legislation, ratification by the Verkhovna Rada will be necessary.

On February 25, the Financial Times reported that Ukraine and the United States had agreed on the terms of a mineral rights agreement and were ready to sign the document in Kyiv.

On February 26, the Cabinet approved the signing of a mineral rights agreement with the United States.

The signing of the agreement was supposed to take place on February 28 at the White House, but due to Trump's dispute with Zelenskyy, this did not happen.
