Bribe of $40,000 for removal of obstacles to business: ex-prosecutor and ex-deputy from Odesa region convicted - HACC

HACC convicts ex-MP and ex-prosecutor for $40,000 bribe

The High Anti-Corruption Court has convicted a former deputy head of the Izmail local prosecutor's office and a former deputy of the Odesa regional council for taking a bribe.

This was reported by the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Censor.NET reports.

Reportedly, both were found guilty of receiving a $40,000 bribe from the head of a business enterprise. In return for this money, they promised not to create obstacles in doing business (Part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The court passed the following sentences:
- the former MP was sentenced to 10 years in prison, a three-year ban on public office (except for elected positions) and confiscation of property. His bail was also increased to UAH 5 million;
- the former prosecutor was sentenced to 8 years in prison, a three-year ban on holding positions in the judiciary, confiscation of property and deprivation of the title of counsellor of justice.

The verdict can be appealed to the HACC Appeals Chamber within 30 days.

According to media reports, the cases concern the former deputy head of the Izmail Prosecutor's Office, Ivan Marakhovskyi, and a former deputy of the Odesa Regional Council, Ivan Boichenko.

The investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau began in 2017.
