Russia’s KAB strikes on Kharkiv, dollar exchange rate above 45, and Ukrainian pilots’ training on Rafale: top news for 5 October. VIDEO

Russian forces have launched a strike on Kharkiv using KAB bombs — there are fatalities and over fifty wounded. Russian drones also attacked a Turkish civilian vessel in the Black Sea. Ukrainian pilots are preparing for training on Rafale fighter jets in France, whilst the official dollar exchange rate has crossed the 45 hryvnia mark for the first time in history.

Russian strike on Kharkiv

Russian occupiers launched a strike using KAB bombs on one of Kharkiv’s districts. Six people are reported to have been killed and over 50 wounded.

Russian drones strike a grain carrier in the Black Sea 

Russian drones attacked a Turkish civilian vessel carrying maize in neutral waters. The ship’s captain was killed.

A shell struck a bus near a checkpoint on the border with Moldova

Near the ‘Palanka – Maiaky – Udobne’ checkpoint on the border between Ukraine and Moldova, a shell fell during a Russian attack and, after ricocheting, struck a parked bus. A Moldovan border guard sustained minor injuries, and operations at the checkpoint were temporarily suspended.

Defence forces struck a Russian UAV launch site in the temporarily occupied territories

Ukrainian defenders struck Russian military targets in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia. Strike UAV launch sites, a communications hub, a command post, a drone depot and a repair unit belonging to the occupiers were hit.

Ukrainian pilots to begin training on the Rafale

Ukrainian pilots are set to begin training on French Rafale aircraft in France in the near future. This was announced following a conversation between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French leader Emmanuel Macron.

ATB retail chain hit by cyberattack

The website of the ATB retail chain has been hit by a cyberattack, though the company has assured that no data has been leaked and technical work is currently underway.

The dollar has crossed the 45 mark

The official hryvnia-to-dollar exchange rate has crossed the 45 hryvnia mark for the first time in history, whilst the hryvnia has strengthened by 5 kopecks against the euro.

  • Poland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, has stated that discussions are still ongoing in Poland regarding Ukraine’s request for Warsaw to be allowed to shoot down Russian drones and missiles over Ukrainian territory.
  • Russian attacks have almost brought Ukraine’s steel industry to a standstill: around 90 per cent of steel production has ceased, and in the worst-case scenario, the economic losses could reach 6.5–7 per cent of GDP.
