Ukraine’s NATO membership is not currently on agenda, - Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

The United States is currently unable to state unequivocally whether Ukraine should become a full member of NATO.

This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a briefing in Iceland, according to Censor.NET.

The US position

The head of US diplomacy was asked what his position was on Ukraine’s membership of NATO and whether Ukraine should be a member of the Alliance.

"There is no ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer here, apart from the fact that, as you know, Ukraine’s NATO membership is not currently on the agenda," Rubio replied.

The US may play a certain role

The American official explained that, for this to happen, a process of reaching consensus must take place — a process that requires unanimity.

Rubio emphasised that, when it comes to Ukraine, the US is currently focused on bringing the war to an end.

"We have made it clear that we can play a certain role in bringing this war to an end. We want to play a constructive role," he added.

  • It should be recalled that in February 2025, US President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine needed to "forget" about joining NATO. During a press conference, he said that Ukraine’s alleged desire to join NATO had triggered Russia’s full-scale invasion.
  • In March 2025, Trump reiterated that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants Ukraine to join NATO, but that this will never happen.
  • On 2 June, Mark Rutte confirmed that Ukraine’s NATO membership remains on the agenda and that the Alliance will continue to support Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine war.
