A special relief centre has begun operating at the arrival point for the Ukrainian humanitarian mission from the temporarily occupied town of Oleshky.

This was reported by Censor.NET, citing Ukrinform.

Medical examinations and first aid

Representatives of the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, medical staff, a psychological support service and voluntary organisations are working at the meeting point. Mobile warming centres have been set up and hot meals are being provided. Wheelchairs are available for people with reduced mobility. A designated area for animals, complete with water and food, has also been prepared. A separate vehicle has been allocated to transport animals as part of the humanitarian mission.

As Dr Bogdan Komlevyi, a representative of the medical mission at the humanitarian headquarters, told journalists, the first priority will be to carry out medical examinations of all those who have arrived and, where necessary, to provide first aid on the spot.

"We have specialists in all fields – from surgery to general medicine. If anyone requires immediate medical attention, we will transport them straight to a medical facility," he said.

Yulia Stefanuk, a representative of World Central Kitchen in Ukraine, told journalists that special dietary meals, kits for children and pet food had been prepared for those who had left Oleshky.

Special-diet meals, treats for children and care for animals

"We’ve adapted the dishes to suit the dietary needs of people with dietary restrictions, in particular by providing low-fat broths. We have borscht, a traditional dish associated with home. We want them to feel as though they’re returning to their families. We’ve prepared buckwheat with chicken, a light meal to help them regain their strength, as they still have a long journey ahead. "For the children, we have children’s goody bags with treats; we have haematogen, which is important during this autumn and winter period, as well as fruit purées and sweets to cheer the children up. We’ll give them fruit and sweet cupcakes for the journey," said Stefanuk.

She also said that, in collaboration with the ‘Hachiko’ charity, food, water and carriers are being provided for pets.

Those welcoming families from Oleshky are also treated to hot drinks.

"We’ve only spoken on the phone for three years": stories of those welcoming their loved ones

One of the women, Zhanna, left Oleshky after the Russians blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. She travelled to the border area, having heard about the humanitarian mission, to meet her husband. She brought some lard for him.

"He loves lard. He promised to bring me his pickled tomatoes. Kherson pickled tomatoes and Kyiv lard – that’ll make for a brilliant dinner. It’s emotionally tough. For three years, we’ve only spoken on the phone. Imagine how the people leaving there must feel – it’s a shock, it’s the pain of loss; it takes time to recover," she says.

She also explained that the situation in Oleshky is difficult; a humanitarian mission has now delivered food there, and recently the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been using drones to deliver humanitarian supplies.

"If the road to the villages is cleared of mines, then perhaps people will be able to bring in food. My husband has been living off what he’s grown himself for three years," says Zhanna.

The latest plane carrying residents evacuated from Oleshky has landed in Gomel, Belarus.

This was reported on a Telegram channel by Davyd Arakhamia, head of the "Servant of the People" parliamentary faction, according to Censor.NET.

New details

"The last, fourth plane has landed in Gomel (Belarus). In just a few hours, all Ukrainian citizens evacuated from Oleshky, together with the Ukrainian delegation, will be on Ukrainian territory," he noted.

As Ukraine’s Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets later reported, the evacuated residents of Oleshky will arrive in Ukraine shortly.

"We’ll be home soon! We’re currently in the Republic of Belarus – together with our people and even their pets!" he wrote.
