Ukraine’s air defences neutralised over 4,800 Russian "Shaheds" in October – General Staff

Ukraine destroyed 4,859 Russian Shahed drones in October

Intense Russian air attacks on Ukraine continue. The enemy is attempting to hit critical infrastructure and terrorising civilians with various types of drones.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported this, according to Censor.NET.

What is known

During October 2026, the enemy deployed a total of 6,473 "Shahed-131/136" and "Shahed-238" UAVs, designated "Geran-1/2/3/4/5" in Russia.

Ukraine’s Defence Forces destroyed 4,859 of them.

Ukraine’s fighter and army aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, mobile fire groups, and operators of unmanned systems and electronic warfare equipment are working tirelessly to achieve this.

Interception effectiveness

The General Staff noted that the success rate in countering jet-powered Shahed-type attack drones last month was 66%. Ukraine’s air defences are even more effective against conventional Shaheds, neutralising 89%.

"This is a significant result, especially given the scale and growing complexity of Russian air attacks: changes in flight routes and altitudes, the combined use of attack drones, decoys and missile strikes, and so on," the General Staff said.

At the same time, the General Staff stressed that even effective Ukrainian air defence operations do not eliminate the threat entirely. Residents are urged not to ignore air raid alerts.

Need for ballistic missile defence

Countering ballistic missiles, which the enemy used extensively in October to strike Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, remains a major challenge.

Ukraine’s Defence Forces need more effective capabilities to counter Russian ballistic missiles. Meanwhile, they continue to integrate and strengthen the multilayered air defence system and introduce new approaches to detecting and neutralising aerial threats.
