Ukraine remains among four countries that have realistic chance of joining EU, - Mathernova

Despite the war, Ukraine continues to make progress on reforms, and the European Commission’s report notes progress in all areas.
This was stated by EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova, according to Censor.NET, citing Ukrinform.

According to her, the European Commission’s report on Ukraine will be released today as part of the 2026 EU Enlargement Package.
At the same time, she shared several key points.
"First: despite Russia’s brutal aggression and the escalation we’ve been witnessing every day—especially since the summer, particularly here in the capital—Ukraine remains among the four countries with a real chance of joining the EU," Mathernova said.
These countries are Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, and Montenegro.
The second important conclusion of the European Commission’s report, according to the diplomat, is that there has been no backsliding on reforms.
The level of progress across the various negotiation chapters varies—from significant to limited—but progress has been recorded in all areas, the EU ambassador noted.
Mathernova explained that the report assesses not only changes over the past 12 months but also the country’s overall level of readiness for EU accession. In a number of negotiation chapters, particularly in fundamental areas, the European Commission recognizes Ukraine’s overall progress.
"We are talking about results not only since the submission of the membership application on February 28, 2022, but also over the past 12 years of reforms following the Maidan Revolution," the diplomat added.
She identified the third key point as the official recognition that EU accession is a collective effort by the entire society, not just the government or the executive branch.
According to her, civil society, independent institutions, a free press, the judicial system, and national communities all play an important role in this process.
