Hungary to consult with US on renewal of EU sanctions against Russia - Szijjarto

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Szijjarto

Hungary has said it will consult with the United States before deciding whether to extend the European Union's sanctions against Russia, as the deadline expires at the end of the month.

According to Censor.NET, citing Bloomberg, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said this at a press conference in Budapest.

"We will consult with our American partners before the meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday to discuss sanctions," Szijjarto said.

He also added that the position of the new US administration "cannot be ignored".

As noted, Szijjártó said this after the Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Gergely Gulyás said that the election of Donald Trump in the United States had created a "new situation," which means that the renewal of sanctions should not be "automatic."

Earlier it was reported that Hungary refuses to support EU sanctions against Russia for six months without Trump's approval.

As a reminder, the EU renews existing sanctions every six months, and this requires unanimity among the 27 member states.

On December 16, 2024, the European Union imposed the 15th package of sanctions against Russia for its aggressive war against Ukraine.

The 16th package of EU sanctions against Russia is expected to hit aluminum imports, agricultural products, the shadow fleet, and banks.
