EU on Zelenskyy: Legitimately elected president in democratic elections

The EU declares the legitimacy of Volodymyr Zelenskyy after Trump’s statements

European Commission spokesman Stefan de Keersmaeker said that the EU's position on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is clear: he was legitimately elected in fair elections.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the EP.

De Keersmaeker emphasized that for the European Union, Zelenskyy is a legitimate president elected in democratic elections.

"We have a fairly simple and clear position on this. President Zelenskyy was legitimately elected in free, fair and democratic elections," he said.

The EC spokesperson reminded that "Ukraine is a democracy, and Putin's Russia is not."

"As for the information used by the American authorities, of course, I cannot shed any light on this," the European Commission spokesperson added.

Trump's statements about Zelenskyy's rating

The day before, Trump said that elections should be held in Ukraine, as Zelenskyy's approval rating had fallen to 4%.

As of the first half of February 2025, 57% of Ukrainians trust President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while 37% do not, according to a KIIS survey.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the statements about his 4% rating disinformation.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump called Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "dictator without elections" because he allegedly convinced America to "spend $350 billion on the war".
