Rubio: Zelenskyy’s proposal to return nuclear weapons to Ukraine is not serious

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio believes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's statements about the return of nuclear weapons to Ukraine in exchange for NATO membership as part of peace talks with Russia are not a "serious offer."

He said this in an interview with Breitbart News, Censor.NET reports.

"Well, I don't think anyone would think that this is a serious offer from them [Ukraine], and I don't think that arming them with nuclear weapons is the solution," Rubio said.

According to the US Secretary of State, Zelenskyy's statement is an "unrealistic demand."

"We need fewer nuclear countries, not more - and I don't think that will solve their [Ukraine's] problem as they see it. I think he [Zelenskyy] has a fundamental challenge, and that's normal; how do you end a conflict that is ongoing and that will continue to exist and that will not suddenly lead to a new war in a year, two years, or three years? These are things that need to be discussed in any negotiation. But I don't think nuclear weapons are the answer to that," Rubio said.

Statements on nuclear weapons

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that if Ukraine does not become a NATO member, it needs to return its nuclear weapons to ensure its security.

Keith Kellogg, the US President's special envoy for Russia's war against Ukraine, believes that Kyiv has little chance of regaining nuclear weapons as an alternative to NATO membership.
