Kallas on Trump’s statement on Ukraine’s accession to NATO: This is Russian narrative we should not buy into
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said that NATO is the only real guarantee of security for Ukraine, and US President Donald Trump succumbed to the Russian narrative by refusing to allow Kyiv to join the Alliance.

Why are we in NATO? Because we are afraid of Russia. And the only thing that really works - the only security guarantee that works - is the NATO umbrella," she said.
Kallas harshly criticised Donald Trump's words that Ukraine can forget about joining the Alliance, as it was NATO that allegedly caused the full-scale invasion of Russia. She stressed that such statements are nothing more than Russian propaganda.
"These accusations are absolutely false. This is a Russian narrative that we should not buy into," Kallas said.
She also compared possible concessions to Russia to the absurd situation in which the United States could have negotiated with Osama bin Laden after the terrorist attacks on 11 September.
Kallas stressed that Europe should remain an active participant in negotiations on security guarantees for Ukraine.
"Why should we give Russia what they want, in addition to what they have already done - attacked Ukraine, annexed the territory, occupied it, and now they are offering to give them something else in addition," she concluded.
As a reminder, on Wednesday, 26 February, US President Donald Trump said that Ukraine could forget about NATO membership.
