EU prepares 20th package of sanctions against Russia for anniversary of full-scale invasion, - Welt

Sanctions against the Russian Federation

European Union ambassadors plan to adopt a 20th package of sanctions against Russia ahead of the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to Welt.

According to the publication, the new restrictions are intended to increase pressure on Moscow for its aggressive war against Ukraine and further weaken the Russian economy.

In particular, there are plans to introduce new travel bans to the EU and freeze the assets of individuals and legal entities. Diplomats intend to pay particular attention to persons involved in the removal of Ukrainian children and their ideological re-education.

In addition, additional sanctions in the energy and banking sectors are being discussed, as well as measures to eliminate loopholes that allow existing restrictions to be circumvented.

Brussels is also considering banning imports of Russian uranium and imposing sanctions against the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency, Rosatom. According to Welt, such measures have long been supported by a number of EU countries, but have so far been opposed by France and Belgium, among others.

According to diplomatic sources, these countries could purchase uranium for their nuclear power plants in South Africa, Australia, or Canada, but at higher prices.

As a reminder, on December 22, the Council of the European Union decided to extend economic sanctions against Russia for another six months, until July 31, 2026.
