According to the Russian "investigation", in July 2023, the pensioner transferred funds via a Ukrainian bank’s mobile app to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Russia’s FSB deemed this to be "providing financial assistance to a foreign state in activities directed against the security of the Russian Federation" (Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code).
The occupying "Zaporizhzhia Regional Court" sentenced the woman to 11 years’ imprisonment in a general-regime prison. The Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, emphasised that such "sentences" constitute yet another act of terror against the civilian population under occupation and have no legal force whatsoever. The Ombudsman has already appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross and is working to have Halyna Bekhter included on the exchange lists.
