Fico threatens to veto decisions on Ukraine at EU level due to halt in Russian gas transit

Fico voices new threats to Ukraine due to suspension of Russian gas transit

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico once again demands that Ukraine resume transit of Russian gas through its territory. Otherwise, his country will take "tough measures" against Kyiv.

He said this during a visit to Brussels, Censor.NET reports citing Radio Liberty and Teraz.sk.

The Slovakian prime minister accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of "political whims" and threatened Ukraine with "tough reciprocal measures."

Fico claims that Slovakia could "stop any humanitarian aid to Ukraine, decide to significantly reduce or completely cancel benefits for Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia, or cut off electricity supplies in emergency situations."

He also said that Slovakia would use its veto power in the EU to block decisions on Ukraine.

At the same time, he said, such a step is possible only "if there are no other options."

"If at the same time, he (Zelenskyy - ed.) gives his hand to the EU and asks for billions, it may happen that some politicians in the EU will say no where unanimity is needed," Fico added.

The Slovak prime minister also said that a group is currently being set up to discuss the consequences of cutting off Russian gas transit through Ukraine, which will include representatives of Slovakia, the European Commission, and Ukraine.

Halting Russian gas transit

As a reminder, at 07:00 on January 1, 2025, the transportation of Russian natural gas through Ukraine was halted in the interests of national security.

The Cabinet of Ministers said that Ukraine had duly informed the European Commission about the halting of gas transit. European countries are prepared.

Earlier, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also threatened to stop exporting electricity to Ukraine and significantly reduce support for Ukrainian refugees in response to the suspension of Russian gas transit through Ukrainian territory.
