Trump: War in Ukraine is "actually drawing to close"

US President Donald Trump has once again stated that Russia’s war against Ukraine, despite outward appearances, is in fact drawing to a close. He also admitted that he considered it the easiest of all the conflicts he had attempted to resolve.
Trump made these remarks to journalists on 6 October, according to Censor.NET.
A new statement on peace
Speaking about ending wars, Trump stated that during his second term he had brought eight conflicts to an end. According to him, it was the Russian-Ukrainian war that he considered the "easiest" for himself.
"Many people are dying there. What is happening is absurd, but, believe it or not, it is actually drawing to a close," said the US president.
The topic of tariffs and the economy
In the same speech, Trump spoke about the economic results of his policies. According to him, around 21 trillion dollars is being invested in the US, and the construction of factories – particularly car and pharmaceutical plants – is resuming. Companies, he claimed, are leaving Canada, Mexico, Japan, Germany and South Korea.
Trump attributed this to tariffs, calling them the key factor which, in his view, has made the US a ‘rich country’ once again. He also stated that tariffs on imported goods range from 25 per cent to 200 per cent depending on the product, and that chip manufacturing is returning to the US from Taiwan.
What led up to this?
- On 21 September, US President Donald Trump stated that Russia had lost control of its own oil refining due to the war against Ukraine.
- On 14 September, Trump claimed that Ukraine and Russia had allegedly reached an agreement to mutually cease strikes on energy facilities.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later replied to Trump, saying that Ukraine was prepared to refrain from striking Russia’s energy infrastructure if its partners guaranteed that Russia would not strike Ukraine’s.
- The Russian dictator’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, described a possible energy truce between Ukraine and Russia as a "good idea".
- Media reports suggested that Trump plans to put pressure on his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a face-to-face meeting in New York on 22 September. He wants Kyiv to agree to an energy truce with Russia.
- US Vice President J.D. Vance expressed cautious optimism about progress, although he described Russia’s war against Ukraine as "the most difficult of international conflicts" to resolve.
- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, meanwhile, has publicly called for a separate "energy truce" between the parties.
- In an interview with CBC News, Zelenskyy stated his readiness to meet with Putin in order to bring about peace, and also outlined a condition for de-escalation: Ukraine would cease strikes on Russian oil refineries only in response to a similar move by Moscow.
- Zelenskyy stated that Trump had not asked Ukraine to unilaterally cease strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure.
