Ukraine’s strikes on Russian refineries and Democratic Party are reasons for rising US gasoline prices – Trump

Trump and Zelenskyy

US President Donald Trump has again claimed that rising fuel prices in the United States are caused by Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and refinery closures in Democratic states.

The White House chief wrote this on Truth Social on Monday, Censor.NET reports.

Trump’s accusations

"What's driving up Gasoline is no longer the Strait of Hormuz, because Record Numbers of Barrels are coming out now on an almost daily basis, but the word, "Refineries," where Russia's are being blown up by Ukraine, and where ours are being closed up, in Blue States, like California, by the Dumocrats," the US leader’s post reads.

Trump used his own mocking version of the Democratic Party’s name, replacing "Democrats" with "Dumocrats", a play on the word "dumb", meaning "stupid". These states are called "blue" because their voters consistently support the Democratic Party in elections.

Background

  • On September 21, US President Donald Trump said Russia had lost control of its own oil refining industry because of its war against Ukraine.
  • On September 14, Trump claimed that Ukraine and Russia had reached an agreement to mutually halt strikes on energy facilities.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later responded to Trump, saying Ukraine was ready to refrain from striking Russia’s energy infrastructure if partners guaranteed that Russia would not strike Ukraine’s.
  • Russian dictator’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov called a possible energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia a "good idea".
  • Media reports said Trump planned to pressure his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy during an in-person meeting in New York on September 22. He wanted Kyiv to agree to an energy ceasefire with Russia.
  • US Vice President JD Vance expressed cautious optimism about progress, although he described Russia’s war against Ukraine as "the most difficult international conflict" to resolve.
  • US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, meanwhile, publicly called for a separate "energy ceasefire" between the parties.
  • In an interview with CBC News, Zelenskyy said he was ready to meet Putin to bring peace closer. He also outlined a condition for de-escalation: Ukraine would halt strikes on Russian oil refineries only in response to an equivalent step by Moscow.
  • Zelenskyy said Trump had not asked Ukraine to unilaterally halt strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure.
