Iran attacked the Persian Gulf countries again with drones and missiles: oil facilities were hit

Gulf countries repelled an attack by Iranian drones

On the morning of 12 March, Iran attacked Persian Gulf countries with drones and missiles. The targets were oil facilities and tankers, and some of the attacks were intercepted.

According to Censor.NET,CNN reports this with reference to the authorities of the Persian Gulf countries.

Two foreign oil tankers were attacked by Iranian drones in Iraqi territorial waters. At least one person was killed in the incident, while 38 others were rescued.

The Iranian authorities have claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the tankers were blown up using a marine drone.

Interception of drones in Saudi Arabia and strikes on Bahrain

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defence reported that air defence forces intercepted and destroyed more than 20 drones in the eastern part of the country, where the kingdom's key oil fields are located.

Bahrain said that the Iranian attacks targeted fuel tanks at a facility in the northern province of Muharraq. The Ministry of Interior urged residents of four neighbouring towns and villages to stay at home and close their windows to protect themselves from smoke and possible fires.

Reaction from the UAE and Kuwait

The United Arab Emirates reported that its air defence systems were responding to missile and drone threats from Iran. The Dubai News Agency reported that one drone had crashed into a building near the Dubai Creek Harbour area, causing a small fire that was quickly contained.

At the same time, the Kuwaiti armed forces said that their air defence systems were also responding to hostile missiles and drones.

Strikes on Iran

  • On the evening of 28 February, a senior Israeli official told Reuters that Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed that morning in an Israeli air strike on Iran. His body had already been found.
  • US President Donald Trump later confirmed the death of Ayatollah Khamenei.
  • On 3 March, sources at Iran International TV reported that the son of the slain Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba, had been chosen as Iran's next supreme leader.
  • Later, it became known that Iran's Assembly of Experts had not yet elected a new supreme leader.
  • Later, the Iranian state agency Fars reported that the Council of Experts had voted by a majority to support the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran's new supreme leader.
